Abstract
Background Continuity of Care (COC) in midwifery services is a holistic assistance provided to women from the gestation period to family planning (FP) services. Pregnancy itself is defined as a conception process that occurs due to the
fertilization of an ovum by a sperm in the ovary. Furthermore, labor is defined as a natural phenomenon of the expulsion of the products of conception, which include the fetus, placenta, umbilical cord, and amniotic membranes. Post-delivery, the mother enters the postpartum period, calculated from two hours after placental expulsion, while the newborn (NB) phase refers to the first hour after birth. To establish a prosperous family, the FP program serves as an instrument to delay pregnancy or spacing childbirth at an ideal marriage age. Objective: This study aims to provide comprehensive midwifery care for Mrs. S, starting from a normal monitored pregnancy, management of anemia complications during the postpartum phase, monitoring of the newborn without complications, to the selection of contraceptive methods. Methods This research design applied a qualitative descriptive approach through a case study method focusing on Mrs. S, 19 years old, with obstetric status G1P0A0. Data were collected directly through anamnesis, clinical observation, and physical examination. Data analysis and formulation were described narratively by referring to the framework of Helen Varney's Seven-Step Management. Results The implementation of continuous midwifery care (COC) for Mrs. S was fully carried out, covering the antenatal, intranatal, postnatal phases, newborn care, and family planning services. During the monitoring period, the only health issue identified in the
patient was postpartum anemia. Conclusion The application of Helen Varney's Seven-Step Management continuously to Mrs. S—which included normal pregnancy, normal delivery, postpartum with anemia complications, a healthy newborn, and contraceptive services—proved capable of optimizing the midwife's role in supporting the reduction of Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) and Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) through holistic care.
