Abstract
Mastitis is an inflammation of the breast tissue that commonly occurs during the postpartum period and is often caused by Staphylococcus aureus infection. This condition not only results in pain and discomfort but can also interfere with the breastfeeding process. The purpose of this study was to implement maternity nursing care management based on a service excellent approach for Mrs. J, a postpartum mother with mastitis who was treated at Pera Clinic, Medan Tuntungan, North Sumatra, in 2025. Method: This study employed a case study design with a descriptive–analytic approach, structured through the five stages of
the nursing process: assessment, diagnosis, intervention, implementation, and evaluation. Subject: The subject of the study was one postpartum mother experiencing breast pain, swelling, redness, fever of 38.4°C, purulent discharge
from the nipple, and an infant who refused to breastfeed. Results: The assessment identified three primary nursing diagnoses: acute pain, hyperthermia, and ineffective breastfeeding. Nursing interventions included education on proper breastfeeding techniques, warm compresses, breast massage, pain management, temperature monitoring, and emotional support through a communicative approach. After three days of intervention, the patient showed significant
improvement, indicated by reduced pain, normalization of body temperature, decreased inflammatory signs, and increased breastfeeding effectiveness. Conclusion: This study concludes that applying maternity nursing care based on service excellent principles—emphasizing empathy, rapid responsiveness, accuracy of action, and family empowerment—can improve the quality of nursing services and accelerate the healing process in postpartum mothers with mastitis.
