Abstract

Background: Low Birth Weight (LBW) is a condition in which a baby is born at term but weighs less than 2,500 grams. In 2022, the highest infant mortality rate in North Sumatra occurred during the neonatal period, one of the main causes being Low Birth Weight (LBW), with a total of 131 cases.
Objective: To determine the factors associated with the incidence of Low Birth Weight (LBW) at Citra Medika General Hospital, Percut Sei Tuan District, North Sumatra Province, in 2024.
Method: This study used an observational analytical design with a retrospective case-control, involving 48 samples of newborns selected randomly (random sampling) from a population of 562 babies using the Slovin, formula using Chi
Square test analysis.
Results: Among 48 respondents, it was found that regular ANC frequency had a significant effect on the incidence of LBW (p-value = 0.004). Twin pregnancies (gemelli) also showed a significant association, as all mothers with twin pregnancies (100%) gave birth to LBW babies compared to single pregnancies (pvalue = 0.014). In addition, maternal anemia had a significant relationship with LBW, where 73.9% of anemic mothers delivered LBW babies (p-value = 0.004).
Hypertension was also a strong factor, with nearly all hypertensive mothers (94.1%) delivering LBW babies (p-value = 0.000).
Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between ANC frequency, twin pregnancy, maternal anemia, and hypertension with the incidence of Low Birth Weight (LBW).
